Tom Felton Is Back As Draco On Broadway
Tom Felton is heading back to Hogwarts — but with a twist. The Harry Potter star, now 37, is putting on Draco Malfoy’s iconic platinum wig once more as he makes his long-awaited Broadway debut this fall in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
The exciting news dropped on Thursday, June 5 — fittingly, the fictional Draco’s birthday — on the Today show. Tom, who became a household name playing the snarky Slytherin from 2001 to 2011, will now take the stage at New York City’s Lyric Theatre beginning November 11. He’ll star as the grown-up version of Draco for a limited 19-week run.
“It’s very much a pinch-me kind of situation,” Tom said during the announcement. “I let go of that character 16 years ago, and now getting a chance to step back into his shoes — as a father this time, in a new story — I get to meet Draco as an adult, which is very exciting.”
This marks the first time any actor from the original movie cast has officially joined the stage play, which is set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The play begins at the famous Platform 9¾, with Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley sending their son Albus off to Hogwarts.
Tom is stepping into the shoes of Draco at the exact age the character is in the play — a detail he called a “full-circle moment.” In a statement released on Thursday, he shared, “Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play.”
While Cursed Child hasn’t made its way to the big screen yet, Harry Potter director Chris Columbus has expressed interest in adapting it with the original trio — Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson — back in action. It would be “cinematic bliss,” Columbus said in 2021.
And if such a movie ever happens, Tom is more than ready. In fact, he once told PEOPLE that he’d return as any Malfoy —Draco, Lucius, or even Draco’s son, Scorpius. “If you’re asking me will I dye my hair blonde again to be Draco, abso-bloody-lutely,” he joked. “Any chance to be a Malfoy again would be greatly accepted.”
It’s clear he has a special bond with the character, as he said, “I do feel if someone else played him, I’d be slightly possessive, going, ‘Hang on.’”
