A New Moana Has Answered the Ocean’s Call—and Hollywood Is Listening

Disney’s live-action “Moana” carries a huge responsibility. The animated adventure is deeply loved for its music, humor, cultural spirit, and fearless young heroine. Instead of simply copying that magic, the new film places a fresh performer at its center and lets audiences experience the journey through a new face. 

Catherine Lagaʻaia steps into the role of Moana, the determined daughter of Chief Tui who feels called beyond the reef. Her character is not chasing fame or trying to become someone else. She is listening to an inner voice that tells her she can help her people. That simple idea—trusting the part of yourself that knows there is more ahead—still lands with emotional force. 

Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui after voicing the demigod in the animated film. His physical presence makes Maui feel enormous, but the character’s humor and hidden insecurity remain just as important. The cast also includes John Tui, Frankie Adams, and Rena Owen, bringing strong Pacific talent to the family story. 

Director Thomas Kail, known for translating stage energy to the screen, gives the musical adventure a broad cinematic sweep. The ocean, islands, songs, and creatures are designed to feel tangible without losing the joyful fantasy that made the original special. Auliʻi Cravalho, the original voice of Moana, remains connected as an executive producer, while Lin-Manuel Miranda is also part of the producing team. 

The most exciting thing about this version is the chance for a new generation to see a young Pacific Islander heroine lead a major Hollywood adventure. Moana is brave without pretending she is never afraid. She succeeds because she learns, listens, and keeps moving.
