“Doctor Who” And “Coronation Street” Actor Michael McStay Dies At 92

Michael McStay, the veteran British actor remembered for his roles in Doctor Who and No Hiding Place, has died at the age of 92. Known for his warmth both on and off screen, Michael passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 18 after enjoying lunch with his children.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Michael McStay, an actor of the highest standing, talented writer and family man,” a representative shared in a touching Facebook post on May 20.
“It was a privilege to have known Mike. RIP,” the post continued.
Michael’s long career in film and television began to take off when he played Sergeant Perryman on ITV’s No Hiding Place. His steady presence in over 80 episodes made him a familiar face in households across Britain.
He later stepped into the Doctor Who universe, playing Derek Moberley in two episodes. Although his time on the show was brief, Michael remained deeply grateful to the sci-fi series’ dedicated fanbase. In one of his final interviews, just weeks before his passing, he appeared on the Doctor Who: Toby Hadoke’s Time Travels podcast and shared heartfelt reflections.
“The sort of fans that you get on a show like Doctor Who are your friends,” he said. “They want to like you, they want to like the show. It’s a great feeling. It’s a great bunch of people to be a part of in a way.”
Beyond Doctor Who, Michael, who is survived by his wife, actress Jennifer Clulow, and their two sons, worked across both the big and small screen. His film credits include Robbery (1967) and The Stick Up (1977). He also made memorable appearances in TV shows such as The Black Arrow, Park Ranger, Spy at Evening, EastEnders, and Ted and Alice.
Michael’s final television appearance came in 2011 when he joined the cast of Coronation Street, stepping into the role of Alan Hoyle.
Even late in life, Michael remained passionate about his craft. “You have to want to do it,” he said on the podcast. “I’ve always wanted to do it. And I had some good friends along the way that helped me.”
