Shrek 5 Trailer Shows Zendaya Joining Star-Studded Cast

It’s been more than a decade since the last Shrek film hit theaters, but the wait is finally over—Shrek 5 is officially on its way! Universal Pictures surprised fans on February 27 by dropping the first teaser for the highly anticipated sequel, revealing that Zendaya has joined the cast!

The “Euphoria” star is set to lend her voice to the latest installment of the blockbuster franchise. The teaser clip, shared on Universal’s official Instagram page, came with the caption, “Far, Far Away’s finest are coming.”

Amazingly, Zendaya actually manifested this moment years ago. Back in August 2017, she took to Twitter to admit, “I watch Shrek too often in my adulthood.” After the casting announcement, the official Shrek account had the best response, reposting her old tweet with the caption, “This aged well.”

When Will Shrek 5 Hit Theaters?

Shrek 5 is set to premiere on December 23, 2026, just in time for the holidays. This release comes over 25 years after the original Shrek enchanted audiences back in 2001.

Fans of the franchise will be thrilled to know that some familiar voices are making a comeback. Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) are all confirmed to reprise their iconic roles.

As for Lord Farquaad, John Lithgow—who originally voiced the pint-sized villain—recently addressed whether he’d be making a return. Given that his character was famously swallowed whole by a fire-breathing dragon in the first movie, it’s not looking likely. “It turns out it’s impossible to recover from being eaten by a dragon,” Lithgow joked in an interview, adding, “I know nothing about it and no, I’m not a part of it.”

A Look Back at the Shrek Franchise

The first Shrek film was released in 2001 and eventually took home an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The success of the original sparked three sequels—Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010).

But let’s not forget everyone’s favorite feisty feline! Antonio Banderas’ character, Puss in Boots, became so popular that he got his own spinoff movies: Puss in Boots (2011) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022).

What’s Next for ‘Shrek 5’?

With Zendaya joining the team and the original cast members back in action, Shrek 5 is shaping up to be one of the biggest animated releases in years. Fans are already speculating about what’s in store for Shrek, Fiona, and their quirky band of fairy tale misfits. Will we see new villains? Fresh adventures? More hilarious one-liners from Donkey? One thing’s for sure—Far, Far Away is about to get a whole lot more interesting!
