Tom Cruise Wants To Star In Musicals Again

Tom Cruise is ready to trade in his stunt harness for a microphone again. The Hollywood icon recently revealed that he’s itching to do another musical.

During a conversation in London on May 11 with TV host Edith Bowman, the 62-year-old actor talked about what’s next for him, and it turns out, it’s not all car chases and explosions. “Definitely a musical. Absolutely, musicals,” Tom said, adding, “You know, dramas, action adventures. It’s endless. My goals are endless.”

That’s a bold statement from a man who’s already done just about everything from flying jets in Top Gun to scaling buildings in Mission: Impossible. And speaking of impossible, you might’ve forgotten that Tom can sing — and not just in the shower.

Back in 2012, Tom starred as wild rock god Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages, a glam-rock musical comedy packed with ’80s anthems. He shared the screen with names like Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Julianne Hough, and Mary J. Blige, belting out classics like Pour Some Sugar on Me and Wanted Dead or Alive. And no, he wasn’t faking it.

Director Adam Shankman once said he knew right away Tom could handle the role. “I knew in my heart he would never put himself in harm’s way about taking on a part if he didn’t think he could deliver,” Adam told Entertainment Weekly back then. After just one voice lesson, the team knew it would work.

But Tom didn’t just walk in and wing it. He trained for five hours a day for months. “It’s not just learning how to sing,” Tom explained at the Rock of Ages red carpet premiere, “I trained for five hours a day for many months.”

And his biggest lesson? Singing is just another form of storytelling. “Singing a song is very much like acting,” he said, “you’re there to tell a story. And once I kind of figured that out, it was easier.”

Tom’s London chat comes just before he receives an honorary British Film Institute Fellowship and heads to Cannes for the world premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
