Squid Game Director Says the Smash Hit Netflix Show Will End with Season 3
While speaking at a For Your Consideration event in Los Angeles, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk mentioned that fans should prepare to bid adieu to the show in Season 3. The creator was attending the FYC event ahead of the Season 2 launch and was accompanied by lead actor Lee Jung-jae. He also disclosed that viewers are in for a roller-coaster ride, hinting at a “crazy” season.
Season 2 sees the return of the prodigal Player 456, played by none other than Lee Jung-jae, to the arena with a completely new set of participants. Needless to say, the anticipation for the new season is at its peak.
Squid Games was a surprise smash hit and continues to hold on to its title of the most popular Netflix show of all time in all languages. Both the director and lead actor won Emmys for Season 1.
While discussing the immense success of the show with The Hollywood Reporter, the creator said, “Of course I felt a certain amount of pressure because I knew that there was a huge amount of anticipation out there, and honestly when I was creating season one I didn’t plan in any detail that there would be a second season.”
He added, “However, I did have something in mind that if there were to ever be a second season, I had this idea of what story I would tell; I thought it would be the story of Gi-hun turning away from where he was at the end of season one and going back into the games in order to put a stop to the game,” noting that “throughout seasons two and three, it’s going to be about that very journey by Gi-hun that you’re going to be following, both physically and emotionally.”
Lee Jung-jae added that he was surprised Dong-hyuk already had the script ready for Season 2 and on reading the script, was impressed with how the show creator had conceptualized the new season.
He said, “I didn’t think that he would write it that fast, I really doubted he could do that. And when I actually read [them] I thought, ‘This is immaculate, there’s absolutely nothing that needs to be changed.’ It was so well-written and I was just in awe of this talent thinking, ‘This man’s a genius.’”
Season 2 of Squid Game is set to release on December 26 this year.
