Singer Ingrid Andress Criticized for Singing the National Anthem Off-Key
New York Post described singer Ingrid Andress’ latest performance as a “train wreck.”
Intended as the traditional rendition of the national anthem before a Major League Baseball (MLB) event, Andress sang the “Star-Spangled Banner” a cappella in Arlington, Texas last Monday night.
She was reportedly so off-key that some players, including Philadelphia Phillies’ Alec Bohm, struggled to keep from laughing.
During the one-minute and 22-second clip uploaded on X, viewers will easily notice how the American singer and songwriter struggled to hit the right notes, particularly the high ones.
“It was honestly so awful, it was insulting. Surely they must have rehearsed or heard this ahead of time? I can’t believe this was even approved to be broadcast in front of millions of Americans. It was like butchering the anthem,” one netizen commented.
Another wrote, “I sing better than that sober and I’ve been banned from karaoke in over a dozen bars because I was, ‘Bad for business.”
Someone else expressed surprise that Andress has been nominated for the Grammys. “How the heck did she win 3 Grammys??? My grandma can sing better than her,” a Facebook user questioned.
A few compared her performance to comedian Roseanne Barr’s infamous 1990 rendition of the national anthem. Barr knew she was awful as she laughingly sang “Star-Spangled Banner.”
“Someone once said Roseanne Barr sang the worst national anthem of all time. This chick said ‘Hold my beer,” commented one viewer.
“It was horrendous! Right there with Roseann,” said another.
The viral video posted on July 16 has so far earned over 156,000 views and 163 likes.
Meanwhile, an X user with the handle “JaguarGator9” pointed out Meat Loaf’s superior performance from 1994. “If anyone needs a timeline cleanse after Ingrid Andress’ horrible national anthem, here’s the greatest national anthem in the history of the MLB All-Star Game, courtesy of Meat Loaf in 1994,” the netizen offered while inserting the clip in his post.
Three years ago, the country music singer was nominated for Best Country Song and Best New Artist. Born September 21, 1992, Andress’ breakthrough single was “More Hearts Than Mine” in 2019. The track occupied the number 30 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Her other hits include “The Stranger” and “Wishful Drinking.”
