Shogun Takes Home 14 Creative Arts Emmys
On the second evening of the Creative Arts Emmys last Sunday, the TV series Shogun took home more awards than other nominees.
Nominated across 16 categories, the 10-episode FX series received recognition for its makeup, period costumes, stunts, cinematography, sound mixing and editing, main title design, prosthetic makeup, casting, special visual effects, hairstyling, and production design plus the best guest actor award in a drama thanks to Nestor Carbonell. It was the highest number of awards ever for a TV series’ single season.
During Carbonell’s acceptance speech, he recognized the crew at the event. “You’re all here! You’re all nominated! I love the team sport of this,” he exclaimed.
Shogun is a historical drama based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel. It documents the power struggle of the Tokugawa shogunate and the first Englishman who went to Japan.
Other Awardees
Meanwhile, The Bear also collected an impressive seven awards. The awards committee acknowledged Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis as guest actor and actress in a comedy. It also picked up the best directing and writing for a comedy series, both of which honored Christopher Storer.
Other shows that earned multiple wins include Only Murders in the Building, Ripley, Baby Reindeer, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and The Morning Show.
That night, Justin Paul and Benj Pasek from Only Murders in the Building won awards for their original music and lyrics. This made them official members of the EGOT club, artists who have an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony to their names.
The show last Sunday was brimming with celebrity presenters like Jamie Lee Curtis, Nestor Carbonell, Parker Posey, Alex Edelman, Giovanni Ribisi, Philippa Soo, Desi Lydic, Jimmy O. Yang, Brie Larson, Aria Moa Loberti, Damon Wayans Jr., Courtney McBroom, Allison Tolman, Austin Stowell, Sophie Skelton, Wendy Mclendon-Covey, Sagar Radia, Devery Jacobs, Judy Reyes, Yaya DaCosta, Luke Tennie, Michael Cyril Creighton, Harriet Dyer, Adam Pally, and Patrick Brammall.
The red carpet affair happened in Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater. Though it wasn’t broadcast live, audiences can catch an edited version of the highlights through FXX on September 14.
Since the Hollywood strikes pushed last year’s Emmys to January 2024, this year’s ceremonies took place only eight months after the 2023 winners were announced.
The two-night event began last Saturday. It previously awarded entertainment greats like Angela Bassett and Alan Cumming together with the documentary production Jim Henson Idea Man.
