Robin Thicke Reveals Why He Almost Didn’t Ask Usher To Be A Groomsman

Robin Thicke’s wedding in Mexico was already set to be dreamy, but leave it to Usher to take things up a notch. When one of Robin’s groomsmen came down with COVID just before the big day, the Blurred Lines singer had to think fast. Good thing one of his closest friends was already on the guest list.

“Usher was already coming to the wedding, and I was like, ‘Hey buddy, you mind filling in?’” Robin shared on the red carpet at the 2025 BET Awards. With a smile, he added, “I didn’t want to ask him originally, even though he’s closer to me than some of the other groomsmen. But he was very generous with his spirit to fill in for us.”

Robin and Usher have been friends for over 20 years, so when the R&B legend stepped in as a groomsman, it felt right. Dressed in a sleek black suit with a bow tie to match Robin’s, Usher stood proudly with the groom’s party, which also included Robin’s 15-year-old son, Julian, and his 4-year-old son, Luca, who carried the rings in a mini briefcase labeled “Ring Security.”

The wedding took place on May 30 in Cabo San Lucas, where Robin and longtime partner April Love Geary finally tied the knot after a six-year engagement. The couple glowed on the BET Awards carpet, still basking in the magic of the big day.

And the fun isn’t over. Robin teased a romantic surprise honeymoon, though April admitted she has “no idea” where they’re going. “He’s planning it,” she said.

Robin gave her only one clue: “I tell her the weather. She’s allowed to know the weather.” His hint? “It’s going to be warm, it’s going to be beach. That’s her favorite. And I could use a beach for seven days right now.”

Before heading off on their mystery getaway, though, the couple is taking a little time to settle their family routine. Robin shares son Julian with ex-wife Paula Patton, and he and April are parents to three kids – 7-year-old Mia, 6-year-old Lola, and 4-year-old Luca.

Now married and still in celebration mode, Robin and April are setting their sights on more than just sandy beaches. “We actually have a business we’re creating together, and then my new album will hopefully be coming out before the end of the year,” Robin revealed.
