Nicolas Cage Opens Up About Why His Relationship With Sarah Jessica Parker Didn’t Last

Nicolas Cage has a pretty clear idea about why his romance with Sarah Jessica Parker didn’t stand the test of time. The actor, who’s now 61, admitted in a recent interview that his first meeting with Sarah’s mother in the late ‘90s might have been the moment things started to unravel.

Nicholas shared his thoughts with E! News, confessing, “I cared about Sarah, but I don’t think I passed the Mom test.” He recalled the dinner that took place at the Russian Tea Room, which included Sarah’s mother. “…I don’t know if it was my blue Vanson Leather motorcycle jacket (which I still have) or my sinusitis, but I didn’t hear from her again.”

This revelation comes after Nicholas, 60, spilled the beans about their brief romance during the July 13, episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. When Andy asked, “Did you date Nic Cage?” Sarah didn’t hesitate to respond with a yes, confirming the long-rumored relationship from their time together while filming Honeymoon in Vegas in the early ’90s.

Andy, acting surprised, joked with Sarah, “Oh, wow. Oh, we got some talking to do.”

But despite the brief fling, it is clear both stars have moved on to lasting relationships. Nicholas, who’s been married five times, is currently happily married to Riko Shibata, whom he wed in a private Las Vegas ceremony in 2021. The couple recently welcomed their daughter, August Francesca, in September 2022.

On the other hand, Sarah has been married to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off star Matthew Broderick since 1997. The two share three children, and Sarah admits she knew Matthew was the one for her “probably pretty early” on. During her WWHL appearance, she shared how she felt after just spending a little time with him. “I just knew he was incredible,” she said, adding that she was the first to say “I love you” in their relationship.

Matthew, also a frequent guest on WWHL, has been equally vocal about his deep admiration for his wife. Reflecting on when he first met Sarah, he gushed, “I saw her walking down the street and thought, ‘That’s it.’” He also praised her sense of humor and wisdom, acknowledging her great talent.

As for Nicholas, he has continued to build his own life, fathering three children: 34-year-old Weston Cage Coppola, 19-year-old Kal-El Coppola, and his newest addition, August, whom he shares with Shibata.
