Mary J. Blige Sings Praises For Longtime Pal Taraji P. Henson: “She Is Unapologetically Herself”

In a heartfelt tribute, Mary J. Blige, the iconic Queen of R&B, took to pen and paper to celebrate her enduring friendship with actress Taraji P. Henson. Taraji, a prominent figure in this year’s TIME’s “100 Most Influential People” list, garnered warm words from Mary, who has known her for over 15 years.

Mary commended Taraji for her unapologetic authenticity, hailing her as a beacon of courage both on and off the screen. The Grammy winner highlighted Taraji’s unwavering commitment to her beliefs and her fearless portrayal of characters, describing her as “just as fearless onscreen.”

“What I love most about her is that she is unapologetically herself. Taraji is a real woman — she doesn’t bite her tongue, and she’s not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. She’s always true and authentic,” Mary said, adding, “Watching her commit 1 million percent to whatever character she’s portraying is amazing. Her courage really sets her apart, in Hollywood and in real life.”

Expressing admiration for Taraji’s work even before they met, Mary recounted how she felt a kinship with the actress through her performances. Upon finally meeting, Mary recalled the instant connection, welcoming Taraji into her inner circle with open arms.

“She was an actor I loved to watch, and I always felt like I could relate to her because she perfectly embodied who we are as women,” Mary said.

“I couldn’t wait to meet her. And when I finally did, it was on and popping from there. Taraji fit right into my crew,” she added of the actress, whom she had been close to ever since they both appeared as costars in the Tyler Perry film, I Can Do Bad All By Myself in 2009.

The bond between the Real Love singer and Taraji extends beyond the silver screen, with the two enjoying vacations and attending events together over the years. Mary’s support for Taraji’s was also evident when she spoke at the latter’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in 2019.

As Mary gears up for the upcoming Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit, she continues her mission to empower women. Founded by Mary, the event boasts performances from top-tier musicians and comedians, alongside keynote speakers and inspirational panels. This year’s festival, a departure from its usual Atlanta location, will take place in New York City, promising a star-studded lineup and memorable experiences for attendees.
