Martha Stewart Playfully Rebuffs Drew Barrymore: “You’re the Wrong Gender”

Queen of home decor and holiday recipes Martha Stewart playfully rebuffed ET actress Drew Barrymore during an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show

Barrymore, who has a tendency to show her guests unwarranted physical affection, asked Stewart about things that made her emotionally “soft and gooey.” Stewart seemed initially perplexed by the question and responded, “Soft and gooey…treatment.”

The 49-year-old interviewer repeated, “Soft and gooey treatment?” and started gently caressing Stewart’s arm. “When you’re treated like a lady?” Barrymore prodded in a soft voice.

Stewart tentatively answered, “It’s nice.” The Charlie’s Angels star continued touching Stewart. “When someone comes in—,” Barrymore began to explain but the 83-year-old cut her off.

Stewart pushed her away and interrupted her advances, bluntly stating, “You’re the wrong gender.”

Barrymore exclaimed, “I know, I know,” and fell backward on the couch. Audience members, Stewart, and Barrymore shared a laugh.

Social Media Weighs In

Of course, netizens couldn’t help but weigh in on the exchange. Several social media users commented on Barrymore’s unique interview style.

“Awful interview style,” one Facebook user wrote. “Who thought she was a good idea for a talk show? She should keep her hands to herself. Very touchy-feely.”

Another pointed out, “Drew is too intimate with all her guests. As viewers, it looks uncomfortable..not everyone likes to be close.”

“I would push her away too,” someone else added.

Barrymore’s Other “Cringey” Interviews

Since the show began airing in 2020, Barrymore has established a reputation for being overly and unnecessarily affectionate with guests, a habit that some viewers have described as “cringey” and “creepy.”

Last December, she famously held Oprah Winfrey’s hand while they talked. Winfrey later stood up for Barrymore, assuring TMZ that she wasn’t “uncomfortable at all” and the interaction was “endearing.”

Barrymore again faced backlash when she referred to Kamala Harris as the “Mom-ala of the country” and held both of her guest’s hands.

The 50 First Dates lead actress previously acknowledged people’s comments and said that she would try to tone it down. “I’ll try to practice physical distance, which is not my strong point,” Barrymore said in August.

In the same interview, Barrymore explained her behavior as a way of enjoying people’s company. “Do you know how hard the pandemic was for me?” she began. “I was alone in a studio by myself! I like to be around people. It’s not everyone’s favorite, but I’m sorry to those people.”
