Louis Tomlinson, 32, has spoken out following the heartbreaking death of his former One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne. On October 17, Tomlinson took to Instagram to share a touching tribute, expressing his grief over losing someone he considered a “brother.” Liam passed away the day before, on October 16, after a tragic fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In his heartfelt post, Louis made a special promise to Liam’s 7-year-old son, Bear Grey, whom Liam shared with his ex, Cheryl. “I want you to know that if Bear ever needs me, I will be the Uncle he needs in his life and tell him stories of how amazing his dad was,” Louis wrote, showing his unwavering support for Liam’s family during this difficult time.
Liam’s untimely passing was confirmed by the Policía Federal Argentina, who reported that the singer died after falling multiple stories at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel.
Further details were provided by Alberto Crescenti, head of Buenos Aires’ public emergency medical services, who stated that Liam fell into the hotel’s internal courtyard. A preliminary autopsy later confirmed that Liam suffered multiple injuries and internal hemorrhaging, which tragically led to his death.
While Liam had always kept much of his personal life private, a rare glimpse into his relationship with his son Bear surfaced after his death. A Snapchat video from Liam’s 31st birthday in August has been widely shared, showing Liam’s excitement about speaking with his son that day. “He’s so big now. He’s a big boy, and he looks like a mini-me,” Liam said in the video, playfully adding, “As if we need any more me in the world.”
Zayn Malik has also expressed feelings of devastation since Liam’s death, as he shred a photo of them both as teenagers. “Liam, I have found myself talking out loud to you, hoping you can hear me, I can’t help but think selfishly that there was so many more conversations for us to have in our lives. I never got to thank you for supporting me through some of the most difficult times in my life,” he wrote alongside tthe photo.
The music world has been left stunned by the loss of Liam, who touched millions through his music, both with One Direction and as a solo artist. While fans grieve his death, love and support has poured in from friends and colleagues, including Rita Ora who broke down during a performance of For You, her 2018 hit duet with Liam from the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack.
During the performance, a touching photo of Rita and Liam was displayed on the screen behind her. Fans in the audience captured heartbreaking footage of the moment when Rita paused mid-song, clearly overcome with emotion. Fighting back tears, she addressed the crowd, saying, “I can’t even sing this right now. Can you sing this for me?”
The next day, the 33-year-old pop star shared her grief with fans in a heartfelt post on social media. She included a series of photos of herself and Liam, both in the studio and promoting their collaboration. “I’m devastated,” Rita wrote, adding, “He had the kindest soul, I will never forget.”
