Lizzo Opens Up About ‘Dark Cloud’ Of Depression, Says It’s ‘Finally Clearing Up’

Lizzo recently opened up about overcoming a challenging period in her life. In an Instagram post on Wednesday, the 36-year-old shared that she’s “the happiest I’ve been in 10 months.”

Reflecting on her struggles, Lizzo explained, “The strange thing about depression is you don’t know you’re in it until you’re out of it. I’m definitely not all the way as carefree as I used to be.. But the dark cloud that followed me every day is finally clearing up.”

“My smile reaches my eyes again and that’s a win. I thought my album was finished.. but I gotta get some of these good vibes off in a banger real quick. Thanks for your patience,” she added.

Since August, Lizzo (real name Melissa Jefferson) has been in a legal battle with her former backup dancers. They filed a lawsuit against her for sexual and racial harassment and creating a hostile work environment. Lizzo vehemently denied these allegations in a social media statement, saying, “My work ethic, morals, and respectfulness have been questioned. My character has been criticized. Usually, I choose not to respond to false allegations but these are as unbelievable as they sound … too outrageous not to be addressed.”

Despite her petition to dismiss the lawsuit being denied in February, Lizzo continued to speak out. In March, she shared her exhaustion from the constant scrutiny, saying, “All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it.”

“But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it. I’m constantly up against lies being told about me for clout & views … being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look,” she concluded.

The powerhouse singer known for her hit About Damn Time, felt her character was being “picked apart by people who don’t know me and [are] disrespecting my name.” She ended a heartfelt post with “I quit,” leading many to think she was quitting social media.

However, Lizzo returned in April to clarify her stance. “When I say I quit, I mean I quit giving any negative energy attention,” she explained.

“What I’m not going to quit is the joy of my life which is making music, which is connecting with people because I know I’m not alone. In no way shape or form am I the only person who is experiencing that negative voice that seems to be louder than the positive,” she stated.

Now, Lizzo is back with a positive outlook. “My smile reaches my eyes again and that’s a win. I thought my album was finished… but I gotta get some of these good vibes off in a banger real quick,” she shared, hinting at new music on the horizon.

Her last album, Special, came out in 2022, but she’s been teasing new work since January with a studio performance video captioned, “the magic is back.”
