Lisa Marie Presley’s Untold Story: A Stirring Memoir by Her Daughter
In a touching tribute, Riley Keough has unveiled the unfinished memoir of her late mother, Lisa Marie Presley. Titled “From Here to the Great Unknown,” the memoir offers a glimpse into the tumultuous life of the daughter of “the King,” Elvis Presley. While Lisa Marie’s life had its share of highly publicized moments—like her brief marriage to pop icon Michael Jackson—it was also marked by grief and struggle.
Riley revealed that her mother had been grappling with writing the book, particularly in the last decade of her life, which she described as “so brutally hard.” At the start of 2023, Riley had agreed to help Lisa Marie complete the memoir, but tragedy struck when Lisa Marie passed away suddenly from complications related to a previous surgery. “She was incredibly insecure, and I think there were moments where she kind of was going, ‘Why am I even writing a book about myself?’” Riley told Oprah Winfrey during a recent special.
The memoir touches on Lisa Marie’s devastating losses, including the death of her son, Benjamin Keough, by suicide in July 2020. “The moment my brother died, I was like, ‘This is the end of her,’ because they were so close,” Riley reflected, emphasizing the impact of that tragedy on her mother. Lisa Marie wrote, “Ben didn’t stand a f***ing chance,” capturing the heartbreaking generational cycles of grief that plagued their family.
Lisa Marie also shared that she kept Benjamin’s body at home for two months after his death. “I felt so fortunate that there was a way that I could still parent him,” she wrote. Additionally, the memoir reveals the deep bond between mother and son, including their shared struggles with addiction. Lisa Marie began battling opioid addiction after the birth of her twins in 2008, ultimately reaching a low point where she was taking 80 painkillers a day.
Riley recounted the “unbearably dark” times that surrounded her mother’s addiction. Lisa Marie found herself involved in very public relationships, including a brief marriage to Jackson, who claimed to be a virgin upon their meeting. “Michael said, ‘I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m completely in love with you,’” she recalled.
With the release of “From Here to the Great Unknown,” Riley hopes to honor her mother’s legacy while highlighting the complexities of their family dynamics, including a fraught relationship with her grandmother, Priscilla Presley. In the wake of Lisa Marie’s passing, a legal battle over Graceland ensued.
As the world mourns the loss of Lisa Marie Presley, Riley’s memoir shines a light on a life filled with sorrow and enduring love.
