Les Grossman Might Be Back: Tom Cruise In Talks For Standalone Movie

Tom Cruise in a fat suit, yelling into a phone with giant fake hands, and dancing like nobody’s watching? Yes, please. Les Grossman, the over-the-top movie producer Tom hilariously brought to life in 2008’s Tropic Thunder, might finally be getting his own movie.

Director Christopher McQuarrie, who’s currently working with Tom on Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, just dropped a major tease during an interview on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. According to Chris, he and Tom have had “very serious conversations” about turning Les Grossman’s chaos into a full-length feature. And from the sound of it, those talks are wild.

“The conversations we’ve had about Les Grossman are so f—ing funny,” Christopher said, laughing.

“[Cruise and I are] talking about it. We’re having very serious conversations about it, and how best to do it,” he added.

Apparently, in the middle of all the pressure and intensity of filming The Final Reckoning, daydreaming about the explosive, no-nonsense Hollywood exec gave the duo a chance to breathe.

Chris stated, “Just to be sitting at a breakfast table not talking about the movie we’re making for a minute is such decompression. And just riffing with Tom playing Les Grossman at the table, it was one of the real joys of making this movie. It was all the stuff we were doing, planning the future while slugging out the present.”

For fans who’ve been begging for more of Les’ outrageous one-liners and cringe-dance moves, this is huge news. The character became an instant cult favorite in Tropic Thunder, where Tom shocked audiences by completely transforming — loud, bald, hairy-armed, and out of control.

While Tom continues to wow fans with his serious action chops in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, which just earned a five-minute standing ovation at Cannes, it’s clear he still has love for his more outrageous side too. At the festival, Tom thanked the audience for their support and gave a heartfelt shoutout to Christopher, calling him “absolutely brilliant.”
