Keanu Reeves And Alex Winter To Make Broadway Debut In “Waiting For Godot”

Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are reuniting for an exciting new chapter in their long-standing friendship: a Broadway revival of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. The actors, who first teamed up 35 years ago in the beloved sci-fi comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, will star in this iconic play set to hit the Great White Way in fall 2025.

Directed by acclaimed theater director Jamie Lloyd, this production will mark Keanu’s Broadway debut. In a joint statement, Keanu and Alex expressed their enthusiasm: “We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays.”

Keanu, 59, will take on the role of Estragon, while Alex, also 59, will play Vladimir in this celebrated existential masterpiece.

Waiting for Godot first premiered in Paris in 1953, with its English-language debut following in London in 1955. The play has seen numerous revivals over the years, including notable productions in 1956 with Bert Lahr and E. G. Marshall, and more recently in 2009 with Bill Irwin and Nathan Lane, and in 2013 with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.

Jamie, known for his innovative takes on classic works, has previously collaborated with top stars such as Jessica Chastain, Tom Holland, and Emilia Clarke. This fall, Lloyd will also be represented on Broadway with the highly anticipated revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, starring Nicole Scherzinger, which has already garnered seven Olivier Awards.

For Keanu and Alex, their upcoming Broadway venture is a natural extension of their bond, which began on the set of Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Their friendship has flourished over the decades, with the pair reprising their iconic roles in Bill & Ted Face the Music in 2020.

“I think of him as my brother. We enjoy each other’s company and our thoughts and takes on the world. When we come together, it’s like, ‘What are you thinking?’ ‘I don’t know, but this is kind of funny.’ ‘Yeah, that’s kind of weird too,’” Keanu said about Alex in a 2020 New York Times interview.

Alex echoed this sentiment, noting how rare it is to connect so deeply with someone. Speaking of how he and Keanu clicked instantly as friends, he said, “That happens in life very rarely. We have a very similar perspective. Keanu is a very smart fella, and I enjoy his intellect and the way he looks at the world. And we laugh our butts off.”
