Jon M. Chu Spills the Tea on Crazy Rich Asians TV Series

Hollywood is buzzing with excitement after the recent revelation that a Crazy Rich Asians TV series is officially in the works! Director Jon M. Chu, who helmed the 2018 blockbuster, gave fans a tantalizing sneak peek at what to expect on the Oscars red carpet.
“We Needed More Real Estate”
When asked about the upcoming series, Chu didn’t hold back, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “We needed more real estate, that was the reality.” Translation? The Crazy Rich Asians universe is too extravagant and complex to be squeezed into just a couple of movies.
“We developed the movie over and over and over again and we’re still working on a version of something that I won’t talk about now, but the TV landscape allowed us to use all the characters,” Chu teased, leaving fans wondering if a sequel film could still be on the horizon. But for now, it’s clear that TV is where the story will expand, allowing all of our favorite over-the-top characters to have their moment to shine.
Adele Lim Is Back and Running the Show
In a major move, Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film, is the showrunner for the series. This is a huge deal, considering that Lim famously exited the planned sequel in 2019 after learning that Warner Bros. was paying her a fraction of what co-writer Peter Chiarelli, a white male, was making. At the time, she said, “Being evaluated that way can’t help but make you feel that you’re worth less.”
Lim’s return signals a fresh start, and fans are already speculating about what she’ll bring to the table. With her back in the mix, we can expect the series to deliver even more of the cultural depth and sharp storytelling that made the movie such a global phenomenon.
While some fans are still holding out hope for a direct sequel, Chu remained coy about whether the show replaces it. “I don’t know if it’s in lieu of a sequel but it felt clear that every character we wanted to explore needed more room and just a movie wasn’t doing it for us.”
Who’s In? Who’s Out? The Big Casting Question
One major question remains: Will the original cast return? The film starred Michelle Yeoh, Constance Wu, and Henry Golding, alongside a star-studded supporting cast that included Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Jimmy O. Yang, and Ronny Chieng.
While no official casting announcements have been made, fans are hoping to see their faves reprise their roles. After all, what’s Crazy Rich Asians without the fabulous Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeoh) serving up icy glares and iconic one-liners?
Considering the film grossed over $239 million worldwide, it’s safe to say there’s a massive audience ready to dive back into this glamorous, high-stakes world of old money, new money, and non-stop drama.
