Joker 2 Trailer Gets “167 Million Views in 24 Hours”
Warner Bros’ global release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie marked the largest opening weekend of the year by making $155 million domestically. That’s almost double compared to Oppenheimer’s much-anticipated release. Its blockbuster success is creating ripples in the industry, making the film and entertainment studio look good.
It all began with the release of Dune: Part 2 and continued with the premiere of the Joker 2 trailer, which launched to 167 million views in 24 hours. According to Variety, “It’s the biggest and most-talked-about trailer since Barbie.”
The hype around the sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, went digital after Warner Bros debuted a trailer at CinemaCon. The sequel sees the mentally ill party clown Arthur Fleck in a relationship with psychotic Harley Quinn. Quinn’s character will be played by 13-time Grammy winner Lady Gaga. In the two-minute trailer, the pair can be seen sharing similar symptoms of delusion.
The “bad romance” shows Harley Quinn deviating from the storyline introduced by the Suicide Squad in 2016. In the new plot, Quinn is a patient at Arkham Asylum just like Arthur Fleck. The trailer has them attending a music therapy class inside the asylum. Dreamlike sequences of the Joker and Harley Quinn follow interspersed with clips of them wreaking havoc throughout Gotham City.
It’s certainly bigger and bolder than before, and fans are sooo here for it.
But faith in the sequel’s quality is not the only thing the directors are riding on. The trailer, launched on Wednesday, is capitalizing on the popularity of the first R-rated supervillain story to gross over $1 billion.
As the much-awaited sequel will serenade audiences with at least 15 songs, including the original track “That’s Entertainment,” it also stands to benefit from the pop music star’s massive following.
The trailer set a new standard for graphics, with the sneak peek posted on X skillfully giving the audience a look at the movie’s complex narrative. On the platform, it quickly amassed over 14 million views in just 10 hours. That’s considerably higher than major releases like Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune Part 2, and Wicked: Part 1.
Factor in the collective interest around the sequel, and it’s easy to see why Warner Bros is expecting even higher numbers with the franchise’s big theatrical debut.
Some social media users are also seeing similarities between the Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone-led La La Land, which earned an impressive $449 million worldwide.
“You’ve heard of La La Land, now, get ready for Ga Ga Land,” one user commented. Another said, “The movie looks like a dark and violent version of La La Land, it’s so magical and beautiful while also disturbing, I’m beyond hyped.”
“There’s no denying it, this trailer is absolutely phenomenal. I’m incredibly excited for this one.” posted yet another fan.
Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker: Folie a Deux is set to premiere on October 4 this year in the Imax 70mm format, exactly 5 years after the 1st film was released.
