Jill Scott Appreciates Chris Brown Only To Get Schooled – Here’s What People Had To Say
Jill Scott (52) doesn’t let Chris Brown’s past keep her from enjoying his music.
On Sunday morning, the 52-year-old American singer and songwriter shared her thoughts on the controversial singer, tweeting, “@chrisbrown is amazing. How does ANYBODY sing like THAT? Dance, look, Act and Rap… like THAT? Beyond gifted. It appears exceptional people have to go through exceptional 🔥. There’s nothing to debate.”
And yet, there was lots to debate.
One fan replied, “I think the women he’s abused would disagree.”
This tweet is in reference to the Run It! singer’s assault on his then-girlfriend Rihanna back in 2009.
The The Way singer replied, “I doubt it. My Mother’s ex-husband was a mean, violent human AND he could lay foundation better than anyone in my city. What he did with cement was awe inspiring. We got away. He got a raise and praise for his ability.”
She concluded, “God dealt with the rest.”
When users asked her what she meant by that, the singer clarified, “It means that even he had something to offer. He was sick/hurt and did cruel things. I forgave him because of his trauma. Did I forget? Never. So I try my best to choose better.”
Another user wrote, “He has so many domestic abuse cases it’s ridiculous we can’t look past that.”
However, Scott had a reply to that as well. “I’m not here to fight anyone else’s battles. If/since women hear the stories, they should avoid that street. Therapy for every damn body,” she wrote back.
She further credited her compassion to “years of prayer, therapy, self-reflection, & making every effort to keep my feet on the ground.”
“People go through 💩 and do terrible 💩. We say we believe in God; pray for enlightenment. We ARE a living testimony,” she continued.
“And I caution those who refuse to forgive because they will undoubtedly need forgiveness at some point in their lives. We’re all flawed and need help. Power to people who move past violence. The past is a terrible reminder AND the future is ours”, the highly accomplished three-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter wrote in yet another tweet.
It still didn’t sit right with social media users, including Candice Marie Benbow — a theologian and essayist — who wrote, “Years of prayer, therapy, self-reflection and doing our own work *should* make us more compassionate and empathetic but not at the expense of victims and survivors. I hope you sit with the pushback you’re receiving and understand why many are incredibly disappointed right now”
Well, Scott did do her homework following the immense backlash. The singer claimed she was in the dark about him lyrically pummeling Quavo when she showed her appreciation.
“Walked away, came back, googled, read tweets, listened to friends & considered the state of us as a whole. Some, lead with love ( YOU gave me perspectives to consider & directive. THANK YOU ). Some of you ONLY want the highs of war. You may have your war,” she wrote on the social media platform.
However, she admits to her 1 million plus followers that “he went too low.”
