Courteney Cox Hopes For Dewey’s Comeback In “Scream 7”: “They Have to Figure It Out!”
Courteney Cox is holding out hope that Dewey Riley, one of the most beloved characters in the Scream franchise, might make a comeback despite his tragic death in the fifth movie.
In a recent interview with Variety, Courteney revealed that she’s still rooting for Dewey, who was played by her ex-husband David Arquette. “I understand the reasons they did it, but whoa! Talk about a missed character,” the 60-year-old actress said at the Rock4EB charity event on September 21 in Malibu.
She added, “Dewey is so loved by Scream fans. They have to figure it out.”
Dewey’s death in Scream 5 shocked many fans, and while Courteney wants to see him return, David himself isn’t too optimistic. In July, during a fan call on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, David, 53, laughed off the idea of returning in Scream 7, saying, “I don’t think so — I mean, I don’t know!”
He added, “I guess there’s a chance, but I haven’t gotten any calls or anything.”
He also confirmed that Neve Campbell, who plays the iconic Sidney Prescott, hasn’t spilled any secrets about the upcoming movie.
Courteney, who shares a 20-year-old daughter, Coco, with David, has yet to officially sign on for Scream 7 herself. She’s played the fierce and sharp-tongued news reporter Gale Weathers throughout the franchise and is eager to return.
“They’re rewriting all the time. It’s not like I don’t know what’s going on,” she told Variety.
Excitement is already building for Scream 7, especially with Kevin Williamson, the original creator of Scream, stepping into the director’s role for the first time. Courteney expressed her excitement about Williamson’s involvement, saying, “You can’t get better than that choice. It’s going to be fun.”
The success of Scream VI, which had the biggest opening weekend in the franchise’s history, set the stage for Scream 7. While fans are anxiously waiting to see if Dewey might return in some form (flashback, anyone?), Courteney’s optimism is set to give fans a glimmer of hope that the lovable sheriff could still make a comeback.
