Cher Files for Conservatorship for 47-Year-Old Son Amid His Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues

Cher Files for Conservatorship for 47-Year-Old Son Amid His Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues

Cher is doling out some tough love for her son, Elijah Blue Allman. She recently filed a petition that her son be placed under a conservatorship. According to court documents, the Hollywood A-lister has made the request due to her son’s addiction to drugs, inability to manage finances, and ongoing physical and mental health issues.

Based on reports by TMZ, the 77-year-old icon informed the courts last Wednesday that Elijah’s downhill trajectory has forced Cher to do what she thinks is best for her son. A court date has been set for March 6, 2024.

Elijah Blue is Cher’s son with the late rock star Gregg Allman who passed away in May 2017. He was 69 at the time of his death.

Cher shared that their son has been receiving regular payments from the trust that Gregg set up. The singer said that she is extremely worried that the money is being used for drugs instead of daily necessities.

As the 47-year-old’s mother, Cher believes that she is the best person to act as his conservator. According to her, the rest of their family supports her initiative. They understand that at the end of the day, the money still belongs to Elijah but having someone help manage it under the circumstances will benefit him.

According to Cher, Elijah’s estranged wife, 36-year-old Marieangela King, has been a destructive presence in her son’s life. She claims that Marieangela has kept him from benefitting from all the help and support that has been extended to Elijah.

The tension between Cher and her daughter-in-law isn’t new. In the past, the two have publicly butted heads. At one point, Marieangela claimed that Cher attempted to kidnap Elijah last year so he could be admitted into a rehab facility. The legendary singer has vehemently denied this accusation.

Moreover, The Blast reports that Cher has yet to successfully speak to Elijah about the possible conservatorship. Cher’s legal team stated, “Cher has been unable to discuss Elijah’s preferences concerning the appointment of a temporary conservator because of Elijah’s current mental and physical health issues.”

However, the lawyers added that “Elijah cannot form or express a preference concerning the appointment of a conservator for his estate.”

The legal documents also mention Cher’s concern for her son, particularly that any funds given to Elijah are being used for drugs. If this continues, she fears that he won’t have any assets left. In the long run, the substance abuse will also put Elijah’s life at risk.

Elijah has an ongoing divorce with Marieangela. Cher described Elijah and Marieangela’s relationship in the legal documents as “estranged.”

In the documents, Cher narrated, “Their tumultuous relationship has been marked by a cycle of drug addiction and mental health crises.” Additionally, Cher thinks that Marieangela has been unsupportive of Elijah’s recovery and has not been proactive enough when it comes to helping him become clean and sober. It was reported that Marieangela has also discouraged Elijah from receiving mental health support.

Due to Elijah and Marieangela’s relationship status, Marieangela is not a viable candidate for the role of Elijah’s conservator.
