Camila Cabello’s Album May Be Hinting at an Emotional Breakup
Could Camila Cabello’s new album, Familia, offer insights into her emotional state after her breakup with Shawn Mendes?
Twenty-six-year-old Camila Cabello and her long-time ex, 25-year-old Shawn Mendes, have had a tumultuous relationship. Their friendship started in 2015 thanks to their musical duet, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” In 2019, however, fans started to speculate that something was brewing between them after a steamy music video for “Señorita.”
The two were eventually caught making out in Miami, confirming what many fans had suspected. Neither officially confirmed their relationship status. Camila and Shawn soon started appearing on red carpets together, allowing fans to catch glimpses of them as a couple. Sadly, the ex-Fifth Harmony member and “Stitches” singer finally called it quits in 2021 before a brief rekindling in 2023 at Coachella.
It turns out that the relationship wasn’t as merry as fans thought. Camila is allegedly setting the record straight about their emotional breakup through her new album.
In an old interview, Camila stated, “It’s me sitting with this feeling of understanding that I feel really confused as a 26-year-old.” She continued, “I really felt I was in love with this person. Now, I feel kind of lonely and small and weird, but at the same time, I’m an adult and I feel so strong in other areas of my life, but not this one.”
The “Havana” singer’s new album, Familia, is supposedly about love and a chance for her to reflect on her feelings.
“There’s just the wrestling of those feelings without it being kind of neat or in a box. You can’t really say that it’s a sad song, you can’t really pin it down,” she explained. “It’s just kind of me wrestling with these feelings and me kind of being really present on a particular feeling and exploring it.”
When asked how she was feeling, she simply said she felt “chaotic and brave” especially because her new blonde locks have helped her get her “unhinged sparkle” back. You go, girl!
As for the singers’ breakup, they both announced their split in 2021 via Instagram in an emotional post. It said, “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”
Camila also allegedly briefly dated Lox Club CEO Austin Kevitch last year. At Coachella 2023, however, pictures of Camila and Shawn kissing went viral, which led many fans to believe that the two singers would get back together. But that wasn’t the case.
Most recently, Camila was seen with Canadian rapper Drake. Fans snapped pictures of the two partying and chilling together in Turks and Caicos in December. However, neither of them has publicly spoken out about their relationship status.
Shawn hasn’t made a statement amid all the news, and from the looks of it, he may not say a thing. For now, we are excited to listen to Familia and dissect what Camila may be trying to say through her music.
