Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, and Mike Myers Will Be Part of Shrek 5
Great news for fans of the Shrek movies—lead voice actors Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz have signed on for a fifth installment.
Twelve years since the last production, DreamWorks announced on July 9 that a fifth movie will join the franchise. Even better, Diaz will voice Princess Fiona while Murphy will reprise his role as the voice of Donkey. Of course, Myers will continue as the voice actor behind the main character Shrek.
The production company posted on X, “Not too Far, Far Away… @Shrek 5 is coming to theaters on July 1, 2026, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.”
Its announcement was accompanied by a short 12-second teaser clip that ended with the words, “The all-star returns.”
Already in the Works
Last June, Murphy revealed in an interview that his work in the movie had already begun. “We started doing Shrek [5] four or five months ago,” he told Collider. “I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up.”
The 63-year-old further fueled fans’ excitement by revealing a new spin-off. “Shrek is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie],” he announced.
It seems those were prophetic words since Murphy previously suggested the idea for the spin-off. In a January 2024 article for Variety, Murphy was quoted as saying, “I love Donkey. They did Puss in Boots movies. I was like, ‘They should have done a Donkey movie.’ Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.”
Shrek 5 is being directed by Walt Dohrn, an artist and writer in Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After.
Antonio Banderas may also reprise his role as Puss in Boots though the rumors have yet to be confirmed.
The Movie That Put Dreamworks on the Hollywood Map
When the first Shrek movie was released in 2001, it became an instant box office hit, earning an impressive $492.2 million for DreamWorks Pictures. Subsequent productions turned in even higher profits, with Shrek 2 amassing over $935 million.
It also made history by becoming the first to win the Oscar’s Animated Feature Award. The franchise became so popular that it inspired two Puss in Boots movies which collectively raked in over $1 billion.
The success of the last Puss in Boots film in 2022 paved the way for a fifth Shrek movie.
