Anthony Hopkins Celebrates 49 Years of Sobriety With an Inspiring Message
Hollywood icon Anthony Hopkins recently celebrated 49 years of sobriety with a heartfelt message on TikTok.
For nearly five decades, Hopkins has been a beacon of hope for those battling addiction. The 86-year-old Welsh actor has made it a tradition to reach out to his fans on the anniversaries of his sobriety, offering words of wisdom and hope. This year was no different and Hopkins’ message was as touching as ever.
The Moment That Changed Everything
On Sunday, December 29, Hopkins shared a nearly two-minute video with the caption, “One day at a time. 49 years. Life is in session.” In the candid clip, the actor talked about the moment he decided to quit drinking and turn his life around.
“Good morning. Happy 29th December. 29th? Why 29th? Well, 49 years ago today I stopped,” he began. Hopkins revealed that while he thought he was simply having fun, he quickly realized he was in “big trouble” when he couldn’t remember his actions.
“I was driving a car, drunk out of my skull. Then on that fateful day, I realized I needed help, so I got it,” he said, sharing a sobering reflection from his past.
Reaching Out for Help
Hopkins decided to seek assistance from others who had faced similar struggles. He said he “phoned a group of people” who would become his support network and help him begin his journey to sobriety. Since then, his life has taken on new meaning, filled with opportunities and joy he never thought possible.
“I’ve had more fun these 49 years than ever,” he shared with a smile. “If you do have a problem, having fun is wonderful, having a drink is fine. But if you are having a problem with booze, there is help.”
Hopkins also offered reassurance to those still struggling: “It’s not a terrible deal. It’s a condition if you are allergic to alcohol. Get some help, there is plenty of help around.” He emphasized that he wasn’t alone in his battle, adding, “One thing I did not realize was I was not unique. There are thousands of people around like me.”
The decision to quit drinking not only saved his life but also allowed him to achieve incredible success. Hopkins went on to win two Academy Awards—his first in 1991 for his chilling portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs and his second in 2021 for his deeply moving role in The Father, making him the oldest actor to ever win an Oscar at 83 years old.
