Adele Finally Breaks Silence About Her Viral NBA Moment
Remember the 2022 NBA All-Star Game that gave the Internet many meme-worthy moments? One of the most iconic ones includes international superstar Adele looking anywhere but at the camera. This caught many “memers” attention, as the interaction (or the lack thereof) was the epitome of awkwardness.
Well, the Hello singer, while speaking to the crowd at her Weekends With Adele Las Vegas residency last Saturday, finally revealed why she looked so incredibly done and serious during the celebrity cam portion of the sporting event.
“Do you remember that viral meme of me looking like I don’t give a flying fuck?” Adele asked the audience. “I know it sounds crazy, but I really don’t like being famous, right? So, obviously, I know I’m sitting courtside at a basketball game; you’re asking for it.”
She continued, “The people with the camera came and asked me twice. They were like, ‘Do you mind if we film you? Can we put you on the screen?’” The singer-songwriter said no. She clarified, “I was very annoyed because I had asked not to be filmed … I was like, ‘these motherf****** have come back and are filming me against my will!”
Her solution? To simply ignore the camera. The singer further explained that she was trying to search for Michael Jordan as sports agent Rich Paul was mingling with the players when the camera crew panned to her. To make matters worse, she “didn’t realize they were airing [the footage] on TV” and not just inside the stadium.
Understandably, the singer was annoyed and hoped that not making eye contact would send the cameras away.
The awkward interaction ended up airing, gaining a lot of attention, with millions sharing the video.
Adele also addressed the trolls and put a stop to rumors about her looks. She said, “The reason my lips looked like I had filler—I’ve got naturally big lips, I don’t need filler. The reason I looked like a different person was because I was sulking.”
“I just wanted to give some context. Because I was ignoring, looking everywhere but in the camera,” she continued. “I was just very annoyed because I asked not to be filmed. But I guess I was asking for it by going.”
The courtside video from 2022 made its way all over the internet. Some poked fun at it, saying, “I guess for Adele, Cleveland does not rock.” Meanwhile, another internet user commented, “Boy does Adele look happy or what?”
“Not interested in being on camera, haha,” a third user observed. Fans observed, “Homegirl looks p***ed.” Well, yes!
The singer also said, “Also, my face is very memeable. I can’t help it,” referring to the times her facial expressions have gone viral. Another famous instance was when she was seen shushing the crowd moments before Rihanna hit the stage for the Super Bowl LVII halftime show in February 2023.
It seems memers will always be on the lookout for Adele when she’s in public. And it seems like we won’t have to wait too long for the next one!
