Miley Cyrus Is Facing Legal Trouble Over “Flowers”

Miley Cyrus is the latest celeb to get tangled up in a legal mess. Rumor has it the pop star is facing a lawsuit over her smash hit “Flowers” because it’s too similar to the Bruno Mars hit “When I Was Your Man.”

Let’s be clear. Mars isn’t the one suing Cyrus. The legal charges are coming from Tempo Music Investments, a company that supposedly owns a part of Mars’ hit single.

According to court documents filed by Tempo Music, the resemblance of the two releases is “undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that ‘Flowers’ would not exist without ‘When I Was Your Man.”

It also alleges that “Flowers” used the same “melodic, harmonic, and lyrical elements.”

The firm has expressed its intent to receive damages from Cyrus but we’ve yet to learn if they’ve specified any amounts. Additionally, Tempo Music wants Cyrus to never perform and distribute “Flowers,” which entails removing the track from her Endless Summer Vacation album.

“Flowers” has been topping charts left and right since its release. During the 66th Grammy Awards this year, the 31-year-old sang “Flowers” and earned two wins—one for record of the year and another for her pop solo performance. But some eagle-eyed and sharp-eared listeners have noticed a few similarities.

For those who aren’t familiar, “When I Was Your Man” is a heart-wrenching ode to lost love, with Mars lamenting all the things he didn’t do when he had the chance. “Flowers” is about self-love, independence, and moving on after heartbreak. Cyrus released the song in January 2023, shortly after finalizing her divorce from actor Liam Hemsworth. It talks about creating one’s own happiness and love after experiencing heartbreak.

It seems like Cyrus’ song might just be a sassy clapback to Mars’ regret-filled ballad.

Fans have been buzzing about this for a while. Many pointed out that in “Flowers,” Cyrus sings, “I can buy myself flowers.” Some feel that the line is a direct response to Bruno’s “I should have bought you flowers.” And while the two songs tell different stories, the similarities are hard to ignore.

Cyrus has yet to comment on the allegations. As for Bruno Mars, he’s staying quiet for now, but knowing his smooth style, we doubt he’s sweating this one too much. It’ll be interesting to see if this lawsuit picks up steam or fizzles out like so many before it.
