Jamie Lee Curtis Apologizes For Marvel Comments At Comic-Con
Jamie Lee Curtis, the Oscar-winning actress, has issued an apology for her recent comments about the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The 65-year-old star went viral after jokingly remarking that Marvel is currently in a “bad” phase during an interview with MTV at San Diego Comic-Con, alongside her Borderlands cast members.
Taking to Instagram, Jamie shared her regrets, posting a video featuring herself and her co-star Kevin Hart. In the video, Kevin, 45, praised Jamie’s leadership on the Borderlands set.
She captioned the post with a heartfelt apology, saying, “If I’m a leader, then a leader shouldn’t talk s— about other collaborative art form creators. My comments about Marvel were stupid and I will do better.”
She continued, “I’ve reached out to [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige and will no longer play in that mud-slinging sandbox of competition nor will I engage in the toilet paper promotion or gameplay that is designed for clicks, not content.”
Her Borderlands director, Eli Roth, showed his support by commenting, “love you JLC.”
The controversy began when MTV included Jamie’s response in a montage of actors at Comic-Con answering the trivia question, “What phase is Marvel in right now?” Jamie’s quip surprised and amused her co-stars, while most other actors identified the MCU’s current Phase 5.
Despite the playful nature of her comments, Jamie’s remarks drew significant attention. Reflecting on her past statements, she told PEOPLE back in July 2022 that she would “of course” be open to starring in a Marvel movie if approached.
At that time, she had sparked a friendly “internet feud” between Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and her own multiverse film, Everything Everywhere All at Once.
“Honestly, I can’t imagine that they will ever come calling because I kicked up some dust,” she admitted then, adding, “But I’m a collaborating artist. I work with a lot of people on a lot of different things, and if the role was interesting and if I could bring what I do to it, of course I would [work with Marvel]. What am I going to do, say no? Of course!”
“But I would find it hard to imagine that Marvel’s going to figure out something to do with a 64-year-old woman,” she said further.
Fans can look forward to seeing Curtis in Borderlands, which hits theaters on August 9. The movie, an adaptation of the popular video game, also stars Ariana Greenblatt, Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, and Florian Munteanu.
