Fitness Guru Richard Simmons Dies of “Natural Causes”

Famous for his perky fitness videos from the 1980s, Richard Simmons died last Saturday, July 13, just one day after turning 76 years old.

Simmons’ representative, Tom Estey, confirmed his passing. First responders rushed to Simmons’ Beverly Hills home on Saturday at 10 am. He was already dead when they arrived. Local authorities believe the fitness instructor fell in the bathroom, potentially contributing to his death. According to the LA Fire Department, Simmons passed away due to “apparent natural causes.”

Their report reads, “Upon arrival, one rescue ambulance discovered a 76-year-old male who was pronounced deceased on-scene by firefighter/paramedics due to apparent natural causes. As a result, no hospital transport was necessary.”

The California resident posted on Facebook mere hours before his passing. His last post ruminated on his birthday celebration and festivities from previous years.

“When I taught class at Slimmons, on my birthday they would have special cakes made for me. One was a sheet cake airbrushed with my picture on it… One was a Barbie doll and her dress  was the cake……also what about that cake with a big disco ball on top. It was my birthday when we taped Groovin in the House. …that one was a three-dimensional three-foot cake in the shape of one of my Dalmatians … You know I cried,” he wrote.

“So many of you have sent me birthday wishes on my Facebook and other platforms.  I really appreciate that. I don’t know when your birthday is but I wish you a happy and healthy birthday,” he concluded.

Richard Simmons was a popular fitness personality and actor who became known for his flamboyant and energetic persona. He rose to fame in the 80s because of his fitness programs and videos, specifically his Sweatin’ to the Oldies series.

Though he retired in 2014, Simmons remained popular for his upbeat and jovial disposition. Described by The New York Times as “the Clown Prince of Fitness,” he assured fans of his well-being in 2016.

“I love all the people who worry about me. But it was time for me to take some time to be by myself,” he said in a phone interview.

“This is how I want to live my life right now. And to all the people that are worried about me, please don’t be. If I was in any trouble, if I was hurting in any way, I would reach out. It is time right now for Richard Simmons to take care of Richard Simmons,” he explained.
