Prince Harry Gracefully Receives ESPY Award Amid Criticism
Prince Harry isn’t a stranger to criticism, especially after marrying American actress Meghan Markle. On July 11, as he was recognized by the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) Awards, the controversial royal embodied grace under pressure, refusing to make catty remarks against his critics—or one critic in particular.
People kept a watchful eye on Prince Harry as he accepted the Pat Tillman Award for Service. The award was named after a well-respected football athlete who left his well-paying contract with the National Football League to serve in Afghanistan after 9/11. Pat was killed by friendly fire in 2004.
After announcing Prince Harry as this year’s recipient of the Pat Tillman Award, his mother, Mary Tillman, expressed deep dissatisfaction at ESPN’s choice.
“I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award,” Daily Mail quoted her last month.
“There are recipients that are far more fitting. Individuals are working in the veteran community that are doing tremendous things to assist veterans,” she elaborated.
Unlike the prince, Mary said they “do not have the money, resources, connections or privilege” that Harry has been blessed with. She added the prince is already famous and has been awarded several times. She thus believes that the recognition should have gone to someone unknown.
Prince Harry’s Response or Lack Thereof
The Duke of Sussex had probably heard about Mary Tillman’s rather harsh comments but based on his acceptance speech last night, one would never know it. He graciously thanked the Pat Tillman Foundation who had been part of the selection process. He also specifically mentioned Pat’s widow, Marie Tillman Shenton, and his mother.
Referring to Pat’s mother, he remarked, “[Mary’s] advocacy for Pat’s legacy is deeply personal and one that I respect. The bond between a mother and son is eternal and transcends even the greatest losses.”
The 39-year-old had been selected as the prestigious award’s recipient for founding the Invictus Games, an athletic competition dedicated to sick and wounded military members and veterans.
As the news was announced on social media, people seemed pleased at how Harry handled the awkward situation. “I do not understand why Pat Tillman’s mother was furious over this. No not a Harry and Meghan worshiper, but cannot deny Harry’s effort and military service, as well as his compassion to veterans, especially wounded veterans of military worldwide,” commented See Lëťā.
“I think he deserved it…he has done so much for this wonderful organization that supports so many veterans,” wrote another netizen.
