Sexual Harassment Case Against Jason Derulo Thrown Out On Technicality
The sexual harassment case against Jason Derulo has hit a snag, but it’s far from over.
Los Angeles courts recently dismissed the suit filed by aspiring artist Emaza Gibson against Jason, citing a technicality. However, this setback hasn’t deterred Emaza’s pursuit of justice, as she and her legal team plan to refile the case in New York City.
According to Emaza’s attorney, Ron Zambrano, the judge’s decision was based on a change of venue, not the merits of the claims. Ron emphasized that the allegations against Jason remain unchanged, and they are committed to holding him accountable for his alleged misconduct.
“The judge did not rule on the merits of the plaintiff’s claims but merely changed the venue. The allegations against Derulo by Ms. Gibson remain unchanged and we remain committed to holding him accountable for his reprehensible and illegal conduct. The lawsuit will be refiled in New York and we fully intend to win,” Ron said.
In the original complaint filed last year, Emaza accused Jason of sexual harassment, breach of contract, and retaliatory termination. She claimed that the The Other Side singer promised her success but withdrew opportunities after she rejected his advances.
“Derulo was demanding sexual acts from [Gibson] in order for Derulo to fulfill his role as her mentor, supervisor and musical collaborator,” the complaint alleged, adding, “This explicit demand for sex-in-exchange-for-success was reinforced through Derulo’s subsequent behavior.”
Emaza’s complaint detailed instances where Derulo allegedly pressured her into sexual acts and made unwanted advances during recording sessions. She claimed that after refusing his advances, her access to transportation to his studio was revoked.
As written in the complaint, “After this session, where [Gibson] declined to drink and have sex with Derulo, the offer to arrange for [Gibson] to get to and from Derulo’s studio ceased.”
Jason has vehemently denied these allegations, stating that they are false and hurtful.
“I stand against all forms of harassment and I remain supportive of anybody following their dreams. I’ve always strived to live my life in a positively impactful way, and that’s why I sit here before you deeply offended by these defamatory claims,” he said in a video.
Despite his denial, Emaza’s lawsuit paints a disturbing picture of the alleged harassment she endured while working with the singer/actor.
The case took a legal turn during a recent hearing when the judge ruled in favor of a change of venue, citing contractual agreements that stipulated disputes be addressed in New York courts.
