Is Lizzo Quitting the Music Industry? Artist Speaks up About Her “I Quit” Post

Days after Lizzo posted an emotional “I QUIT” statement on social media, the American singer and rapper gave worried fans some much-needed reassurance.

According to the Grammy-winning singer, she is not leaving the music industry anytime soon.

In a new video uploaded last Tuesday, the “About Damn Time” singer said her initial post was about how she wants to quit “giving any negative energy attention.”  This came hours after she headlined the performance at a sold-out fundraiser for Joe Biden at Radio City Hall, New York City.

“What I’m not going to quit is the joy of my life, which is making music, which is connecting with people. And I know I’m not alone. In no way shape or form am I the only person who is experiencing that negative voice which seems to be louder than the positive.”

She continued, “If I can just give one person the inspiration or motivation to stand up for themselves and say they quit letting negative people, negative comments win then I’ve done even more than I could’ve hoped for. I’m going to keep moving forward and keep being me.”

In the earlier viral video posted on March 30, she said “I’m getting tired up putting up with getting dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet. All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it.”

She went on to share, “But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it. I’m constantly up against lies being told about me for clout & views… being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look…my character being picked apart by people who don’t know me and disrespecting my name.”

She dramatically signed off with, “I didn’t sign up for this s**t – I QUIT.”

The 31-year-old, whose given name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, rose to fame because of her third studio album Cuz I Love You

Lizzo has dealt with negative criticism surrounding her weight throughout her career. And while her reputation is built around self-love and body positivity, she was accused of workplace harassment last year. She has denied the allegations, describing them as “gut-wrenchingly difficult and overwhelmingly disappointing”.

Three of the singer’s former dancers—Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez, described their former work environment as “overtly sexual” in the report. They claim that they were subjected to racially biased taunts and weight shaming.

In another lawsuit, Asha Daniels, a wardrobe designer who worked on the pop star’s tour in 2023, filed a complaint alleging that the entertainer condoned a hostile work environment. She said that she experienced harassment, discrimination, and bullying.

Several celebrities flooded the American rapper, singer, and songwriter’s comment section with messages of support, including Sophia Bush and Kid Fury.

“All of this. The internet isn’t real life,” Bush wrote. “Protect you. We love you.”

“You are so necessary, talented, and important.” Comedian Kid Fury chimed in. “You also deserve peace. Whatever makes you happy, I support.”
