Ed Sheeran Wows Indian Concertgoers by Singing in Punjabi

Last Saturday, English crooner Ed Sheeran held his first concert in India. But that wasn’t the only highlight of the evening. While sharing the stage with Indian singer Diljit Dosanjh, Ed joined in on the chorus and sang the lyrics to Diljit’s hit song, “Lover,” in Punjabi, surprising and delighting his audience.

During his show in India, Ed invited 40-year-old Diljit Dosanjh on stage for a duet, much to the delight of his 50,000 audience. The crowd went crazy when they heard him singing in the local language.

After the successful concert, Ed and Diljit took to their respective social media platforms to reflect on their exceptional onstage experience. Ed penned, “Got to bring out Diljit Dosanjh tonight in Mumbai and sing in Punjabi for the first time. I’ve had such an incredible time in India; more to come!”

Diljit also shared a video of the performance and captioned it with, “Brother singing in Punjabi for the first time.”

Their Indian fans went wild in the comments section. Even foreigners showed their appreciation for Ed’s impressive language skills. One of the comments read, “This is just unreal…I’m speechless.”

Another wrote, “This is the crossover we never knew we needed.” While somebody else added, “I think I have seen history in the making.”

Though it’s an impressive feat, it wasn’t Diljit’s first time to share the stage with a Western singer. Last year, he also collaborated with Sia on a song entitled “Hass Hass.”

Many have credited Diljit for the continuous innovation of his country’s music and for getting another internationally renowned celebrity to sing in the Indian language.

One fan was quick to remember his duet with Sia, commenting, “First Sia, now Ed, Diljit gonna make everyone sing in Punjabi.”

Ed’s concert in India comes after he celebrated his 33rd birthday last month. Recall that to celebrate the milestone, the beloved singer and songwriter posted two funny images from his backstage dressing room on his Instagram account. The photos showed a room overflowing with gold balloons, much to the delight of his 47.4 million followers.

After sharing the photos, the “Castle on the Hill” hitmaker added the simple greeting, “Happy birthday to me.”

One of the pictures was a playful snap of the singer as he wore a party hat on his head and held a party horn to his mouth while adopting a comically neutral expression.

The second photo featured the Grammy award winner wearing a pair of sunglasses adorned with a birthday cake and the text, “Happy Birthday.” In the second picture, Ed wore a black t-shirt with the face of Kevin Myers, his bodyguard, printed on it.

Kevin, also called Security Kev by Ed’s followers, has become known for having a long-standing bromance with the singer. Kevin has accumulated his own Instagram following by sharing pictures of his international travels with his multi-awarded boss.

Kevin has earned a reputation for his hilarious and endearing social media uploads. There was one post where Kev appeared to be giving Ed a kiss. The caption read, “Had an eventful Valentine’s Day with bae.” Even his hashtags, #hegotmeflowers #whatishelike #thenaromanticdinner #thenUNOWHAT #imthedaddy, tickled their followers’ funny bone.

Ed recently finished the Philippine leg of his tour, where he also made headlines after singing karaoke in the country.
