Helen Mirren Reveals What the Deleted Scenes of Barbie Look Like
The Barbie movie had a star-studded cast, with the likes of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, and Ncuti Gatwa in prominent roles. The movie set trends all around the world and was the biggest box office hit in 2023, grossing over $1 billion worldwide.
And just when people thought they had heard everything about the movie, Helen Mirren revealed something that fans just can’t get over. The 78-year-old British actress let it slip that Olivia Colman was set to star opposite her as a narrator.
“It was a very funny scene with Olivia Colman sort of playing drunk and us clashing about who is the real grande dame of British actresses,” Mirren said. “She comes in and tries to take over the role of the narrator and I had to fight her off.”
Sadly, the scenes were cut for reasons unknown. But it turns out Colman’s cameo was not the only one that was cut. Another moment that didn’t make it into the movie was Mirren stepping to lend a hand to the discontinued pregnant Barbie, Midge, during labor in a post-credits scene. Mirren also dropped the F-bomb in response to Nobel Prize-winning icon Marie Curie.
Now, wouldn’t that have been something?
But wait, there’s more.
Ben Affleck was also supposed to make a guest appearance in the film. In the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Michael Cera, who plays Alan, revealed all the juicy details.
When discussing the fight scene, Cera said he wasn’t even supposed to fight in the movie. He added, “It was supposed to be Ben Affleck. Am I allowed to say that?” It turned out Affleck had to drop out at the last minute because of prior commitments.
Two iconic actors were supposed to be in an iconic movie, and unfortunately, we will never see it.
In an interview, Barbie’s casting director, Allison Jones, said that Ben Platt, Bowen Yang, and Dan Levy were all supposed to be Kens but couldn’t push through due to scheduling conflicts. To add to that, Greta Gerwig also revealed that she had written a “specialty cameo” for Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet, but again, their schedules prevented it. The duo seems to be Gerwig’s favorite, as the two have also starred in her previous acclaimed projects, Lady Bird and Little Women.
That’s not all; Matt Bomer almost made it in the film. “I recorded it on my own, played a bunch of different Kens, and I dressed differently for all of them,” he told a magazine. “I recorded the lines of the other person’s dialogue on my recorder and then gave myself space to respond.” Ultimately, Bomer had to walk away from the film because of the extended hours away from his family.
While fans cannot argue over the stars that couldn’t be in the movie, some deleted scenes would be so much fun to watch. Here’s to hoping the filmmakers, producers, directors, and executives somehow get together and make it happen. After all, they wouldn’t want to disappoint a whole fanbase, do they?
Until then, rewatching the Barbie movie will have to do!
