New Game of Thrones Spin-off Will Focus on Aegon Targaryen’s Conquest

New Game of Thrones Spin-off Will Focus on Aegon Targaryen’s Conquest

We have exciting news for Game of Thrones fans: HBO is developing another spin-off!

This time, the upcoming series is a prequel to House of the Dragon. Although House of the Dragon was not as successful as the original Game of Thrones, many fans still follow the show because it enriches the first storyline while giving them more of their beloved GoT universe.

For Aegon’s Conquest, the cable network reportedly teamed up with Mattson Tomlin, the writer who did uncredited brilliance on The Batman. He is currently working on The Batman 2 and the new Game of Thrones spin-off following Aegon’s conquest.

Fans of Game of Thrones and its spin-offs already know that the House of the Dragon was roughly formed 200 years before GoT and a century after Aegon Targaryen’s conquest.

The series is predicted to tell the story of how Aegon defeated Westeros with his sisters-slash-wives, Visenya and Rhanys, including their dragons. Within two years,  Aegon managed to unite six of the Seven Kingdoms. Only Dome remained unconquered.

The series also established that Aegon was the first King to rule from the new city of King’s Landing. The Iron Throne—made from all the swords of the enemies he defeated—was also his brainchild. His governmental reforms led to the creation of the small council and the first Hand of the King.

King Aegon ruled Westeros for almost four decades. For most of those years, the kingdom enjoyed peace and harmony until Aegon died at 63.

His family ultimately continued his rule in Westeros which was predominantly thanks to the strength of the dragons. The Targaryens maintained their leadership for almost 300 years before it was interrupted by Robert’s Rebellion. This all happened about 17 years before the beginning of the Game of Thrones TV series and books.

After the successful run of Game of Thrones which aired for eight seasons, HBO created several spin-offs with different writers, including George R.R. Martin. Unfortunately, only two came to fruition—House of the Dragon, which will premiere its second season this year, and Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: A Hedge Knight, which is scheduled to start filming this year.

The second spin-off is primarily based on Martin’s Dunk and Egg novels. Its events took place 90 years before GoT. The story narrates the life of Ser Duncan the Tall, an honorable hedge knight who goes against the manipulative and evil deeds of the monarchs of the Seven Kingdoms. An insider from HBO shared that it will be a “back-to-basics approach” although nobody knows what this means yet.

Another highly awaited spin-off is Snow, based on the popular character Jon Snow. There are few details about the show and there are rumors that it might come out in 2028. While development is underway, HBO has yet to greenlight its production. If it pushes through, Jon Snow is ready to take up the role once again.

GoT author, George Martin, has been consulted on the series. He reiterated in December 2023 that the fruition of the project remains tentative. “Please note: nothing has been greenlit yet, and there is no guarantee when or if it will be… on any of these shows. The likelihood of all four series getting on the air… well, I’d love it, but that’s not the way it works, usually,” he explained.
