Here’s What Penelope Cruz Has to Say About Turning 50
Aging has long been a touchy subject in Hollywood, especially for actresses over 30. While some resort to hiding their age, here’s what Penelope Cruz had to say about soon turning the big 5-0.
To her, age is just a number, and the 49-year-old actress is here to prove just that. On April 28, the Ferrari star will enter a new decade, but she doesn’t seem too concerned about aging in the slightest. And here’s why.
She said, “People have been asking me about age since I was twentysomething. I was more bothered then than now. Now it makes more sense, to discuss turning 50. It’s a huge, beautiful thing, and I really want to celebrate that with all my friends.” She continued, “It means I’m here and I’m healthy, and it’s a reason to have a party.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean star added this is not the first time she has felt hounded about her age. She revealed, “But when I was 25, they would ask me these psychotic questions, things you would not believe, and the only weapon I would have was not to answer. Even now, on the red carpet, when they shout to ‘turn around,’ I always pretend I didn’t hear what they said.”
Cruz explained that when she used to shoot four to five films a year, the age-related questions were relentless. She recalled, “My rhythm was crazy. I was flying back and forth nonstop, working in the middle of the night, waking up to answer emails, a total workaholic to the point where I was getting sick because there was no sleep. It was too much—for my mind especially.”
She has reflected on how she felt at that age, stating, “It’s so easy to be manipulated, especially if you have a brain that is still forming. And who pays the price? Not us, not our generation, who, maybe at 25, learned how a BlackBerry worked. It’s a cruel experiment on children, on teenagers.”
When asked about her children and their thoughts about potentially following in her footsteps, the actress said, “It’s for them to decide if they are going to have a job that is more exposed to the public or not,” she stated. “They can talk about that when they’re ready.”
Cruz has two children, Luna (10) and Leo (12), with Spanish actor and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (54). The two tied the knot in 2010 and have been together since. Although the couple is quite low-key about their relationship, learning about how they feel about raising their children is quite something. The power couple wishes to continue to keep their lives private and like it that way.
Some other celebrities who are also private about their children include Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, Adele, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepherd, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, and Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher.
In contrast, some celebs and their children do not shy away from the limelight. Angelina Jolie, Jason Mamoa, and many others are often seen out and about with their families and share pictures on social media.
