Welcome Back, Dr. Grey! Ellen Pompeo Returns to Grey’s Anatomy in a Guest Role

Fans of Grey’s Anatomy are all jumping for joy after hearing the news that lead actress Ellen Pompeo is picking up her beloved role as Dr. Meredith Grey. After bidding adieu to the show last year, the start of ABC’s teaser briefly showed the 54-year-old actress, causing waves of excitement among the fans of the longest-running medical drama.

In the clip, Meredith asks, “How long do I have to wait?” before Dr. Miranda Bailey, played by Chandra Wilson, orders her interns to start working. Note, however, that Ellen is only appearing in a guest role. After her exit last year, Ellen remained part of the show as an executive producer. Her voice can also be heard in each episode as an opening and closing voiceover.

Another snippet for Season 20 showed Jo Wilson, played by Camila Luddington, as she was kissing Link, played by Chris Cormack, in the rain. There’s also Richard Webber, played by James Pickens Jr., struggling with his sobriety while in a bar.

Then, there are clips of Simone Griffin, played by Alexis Floyd, talking to Lucas Adams, played by Niko Terho. In the scene, they talked about what happened during their hookup.

The teaser left everyone hanging, with Dr. Teddy Altman, played by Kim Raver, passing out while performing surgery. Winston Ndugu, played by Anthony Hill, stated that “Dr. Altman is in critical condition.”

For fans of the medical drama series, March 14 can’t come soon enough. Based on the teaser, there’s so much to look forward to. Dr. Meredith Grey making an appearance is sufficient reason to stay tuned.

Last year, Ellen shared her reasons for quitting the show and her plans while guesting on The Drew Barrymore Show. After playing the role for 19 seasons, the actress admitted that her brain was turning into “scrambled eggs.”

Recall that it was in November 2022 when Ellen announced that she would be retiring from Grey’s Anatomy after being its lead star for 19 seasons. She stated, “I feel super happy, but listen, the show has been incredible to me, and I’ve loved a lot of the experience. It’s just I gotta mix it up a little bit.”

She added, “I’m fifty-three; my brain is like scrambled eggs. I gotta do something new, or I’m going to turn into, like, you can’t do the New York Times crossword puzzle every single day. I mean, 19 years, that’s more than people keep their kids in their house and then they send them off to college, so this is like me going away to college.”

Drew then asked what Ellen wanted to do next. She replied that she was doing a lot. Ellen continued, “I have three kids, so I take care of them, and it’s really important for me to be around for them and be more present for them.”

Ellen also shared that she has a new role after she retired from Grey’s Anatomy, saying, “I’m gonna do a limited series for Hulu in the spring, which is a very cool kind of crazy true story.”
