Barbra Streisand: Everyone Should Dress How They Want Regardless of Age

Barbra Streisand is staying true to herself and her fashion style. In an interview with The New York Times, the actress and singer stressed that everyone should dress however they want, irrespective of age.

The 81-year-old told the publication, “People should express themselves and wear whatever they feel on any given day.”

The director also reiterated that her style has nothing to do with her age. She added that there were times during her successful career when she didn’t want to project a sexy image.

The Funny Girl star added, “I was too afraid to be seen that way at that time.” As an afterthought, she said, “Now, I’m too old to care.”

Recall that Barbra started her career in the early 1960s during which she performed in Broadway theaters and nightclubs. The New York native then focused on her singing career. Between 1963 and 1967, she released two studio albums.

Barbra was also commended for her Broadway performances in I Can Get It for You Wholesale, which ran from 1961 to 1963, and Funny Girl from 1964 to 1965. Barbra was nominated for a Tony Award for both performances.

After Broadway, she dominated the film industry with the film adaptation of Funny Girl in 1969, a role that earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Whether as an actress, singer, or director, Barbra is known as one of the brightest Hollywood stars of our time. With her impressive abilities, she has proven her multi-talented prowess for more than six decades. She is one of the few personalities who has an EGOT to her name—someone who has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.

As of today, there are only 18 people who have earned the highly regarded EGOT status while only six individuals, including Barbra, have received an honorary award.

Among the many feathers on her cap, her film career took the biggest hit—not because she lacks passion for movies but because of the time it takes to produce films.

After starring and directing the 1991 movie and the 1996 hit The Mirror Has Two Faces, Barbra appeared in only three comedy films in a span of 27 years. Her last movie was released 14 years ago.

The legendary performer revealed to People in December 2023, “It gets exhausting, trying to come up with the structure of the movie and then have it not happen.”

She also confessed, “I had many movies that I wanted to make, and then I got lazy. Oh yeah, I have to have all these fittings for period clothes to do this one. I’d have to live in Arkansas to do this one. I don’t know. It’s complicated, but I am complicated, I guess… I get lazy.”

In Barbra’s recent autobiography, My Name is Barbra, the singer revealed that if she had continued working on movies, she would never have completed her book. She shared, “I had such good movies to make, meaning they were about things I cared about, very interesting subjects.”

It took her a decade to write her 970-page memoir that covered her early life in New York and the peak of her career in Hollywood and New York.
